Don't be an office party pooper this Christmas from the Lincolnshire Echo on Saturday, November 28, 2009, 06:30
Managers who cancel their office Christmas parties could be doing long term damage to staff morale.
That's according to a new decade long piece of research which shows the importance of regular social events in maintaining a strong team spirit.
Jonathan Austin, founder of Best Companies, which carried out the work, said: "Social activities are one of the many great ways to keep everyone motivated and engaged, particularly if it's been a difficult year.
"We recognise that the Christmas party can seem expensive, but even if it's on a smaller scale it will make a difference to staff morale.
"Making short term cuts in this area may cost the business in the long run."
The research saw more than one million responses received from 3,000 companies over a ten year period - with those who had Christmas parties among those with the most motivated staff. here in Lincolnshire it seems many companies are already following the research findings - with team building still high on the agenda.
Michael Self, regional organiser for the Federation of Small Businesses, said he thought many of the county's smaller firms still liked to come together during the festive season.
"Most businesses in the area do still like to have these events, but I appreciate it can be difficult with some businesses feeling that they can't be seen to waste money on the staff when they need to keep the cashflow going," he said.
"But events like the Christmas party help to bind the staff together - it makes them feel appreciated and wanted.
"It's basic team building really - whether you're in an office or the armed forces you need to have that comradeship with those you work with."
